A good manager is always looking for ways to squeeze dollars out of dimes when making purchases for a business. One way to reduce costs when buying products with multiple stock-keeping units, or SKUs, such as Microsoft Office is to find the product with the lowest price that meets the needs of your company. Microsoft's website provides information you can use to determine the difference between products such as 'Office Home and Student' and 'Office Home and Business' and pay no more than you need to.

Applications

Both Microsoft Office Home and Student and Office Home and Business include Word for document production, Excel for spreadsheets, PowerPoint for presentations and the OneNote note-taking application. The business suite, however, also includes a full version of the calendar, time management, contact manager and email application Outlook.

System Requirements

The Student and Business editions have the same requirements for processor, hard disk space, operating system, graphics card, DirectX version, video RAM, keyboard and touch-enabled devices. Some features provided by the Business edition, however, require Windows Desktop Search 3.0, Media Player 9.0, Microsoft ActiveSync 4.1, audio input and output devices, a TWAIN-compatible scanner or digital camera, and access to a Microsoft Exchange or SharePoint server.

Licenses

To reduce the retail price for the Student edition, Microsoft licenses it only for non-commercial activity by households. Even schools and other academic institutions are not allowed to purchase the Home and Student edition and install it on PCs for their students' use. The Business edition, however, can be used for any purpose -- commercial or not.

Price

At the time of publication, Microsoft sells Office Home and Student 2010 and Office Home and Business 2010. Prices for Office 2013 – the next version of Microsoft's office suite – have not been made public. Microsoft's estimated retail price for Home and Student 2010 installed on a single PC is $119.99 and $149.99 installed on up to three PCs. The Home and Business estimated retail price is $199.99 for one PC and $279.99 for up to three PCs.

Office 2011 is still available to students, faculty, and staff via IUware.

To use Office 2016 with Mac OS X, you must be running Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) or later. For Office 2011, you must have:

  • OS X version 10.5.8 or later
  • 1 GB or more of RAM
  • 2.5 GB of available hard disk space
  • An Intel processor
  • A DVD drive or connection to a local area network (if installing over a network), or an internet connection (if downloading from IUware)
  • HFS+ hard disk format (also known as Mac OS Extended or HFS Plus)
  • 1280 x 800 or higher resolution monitor
  • Safari 5 or later (recommended)
